Don’t count your chicks before they hatch!

On a Monday in June, SALI's Farm got a call from a local farm about two baby chicks who were at risk of being killed. Their only crime, out of 50 chicks in a box, they had bad legs (either born this way or were injured in transportation).

They were scheduled to be killed, but the kind wife of the farmer asked us to take them in. We renamed them Thelma & Louise after the dynamic duo Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis in this classic movie.

Is that a rooster?

As Louise grew, we not only became smitten, but we questioned her gender. If only we had a toonie for every time someone said, “is that a rooster?” It’s easy enough to see now, that yes indeed, Louise is a rooster, but you have to forgive us in that we had never rescued a rooster before. And Louise just didn’t fit the rooster temperament - he is the opposite - kind, gentle and adores people.

In this regard, Louise will win over the heart of anyone who meets him and you will see why he suits his name. He shows children and adults that you need to always stay true to your heart and never listen to anyone telling you who you are meant to be.

Make way for a rooster in a wheelchair

Louise needs a little extra care due to his bad leg, and a wheelchair is just the ticket. It was custom made just for him, and we just need to get him used to it and see that it will take a load off of his bad leg. Nothing says, “anything is possible” to the children more than a rooster in a wheelchair.

There is hope for anyone and everyone.
