Optimism and Hope

There is a sense of optimism that surrounds Obama including the hope that he will be sympathic to animal welfare issues.

Here he is, when he was a senator, posing with Baby (a puppy mill survivor) during her road tour of the US. You can read about her tour and see all the wonderful pictures in her book, A Rare Breed of Love by Jane Kohl.

Everyone in animal welfare is also excited that he has promised to adopt his new dog from a rescue.

Here is something that I found a few years back, on a pamphlet from the Canine Advocates Watchdog Society (which I believe was responsible for petitioning for the Blackie Spit Dog Park):

Through the Freedom of Information Act I found out how many dog licenses were bought in 2007:

Whalley...............2,421 (14%)

Guildford.............1,783 (10%)

Fleetwood...........2,104 (12%)

Newton................3,987 (22%)

Cloverdale...........2,611 (15%)

South Surrey......4,694 (27%)

Total......17,600

But this is not a good reflection of the true number since many people do not license their dogs.
